The adirondack chair is stylish, comfortable and fairly easy to make. Picture one on your porch or around your fire pit. I enjoy sitting in mine while reading a book and sipping on some Georgia sweet tea. So far, I’ve made two of these beautiful chairs and learned new woodworking skills with each project. Below, I’ve put together a list of 7 adirondack chair plans and tutorials that hopefully will inspire you and give you the information you need to make your own chair.
1. Adirondack Chairs in 8 Easy Steps – This Sorta Old Life
Cane, the author of this tutorial, will show you how to make an adirondack chair in 8 easy steps. He uses inexpensive cedar boards so the chair will last several seasons. Many people use pine, but it will not hold up as long. All you’ll need is a saw, a drill, a tape measure, a pencil, wood screws, glue, and the wood.
2. Adirondack Chair – Buildsomething
Here’s another great adirondack tutorial from Buildsomething.com. They provide some very well drawn out plans with plenty of detail to make a chair. You’ll be needing a pocket-hole jig for this one. Boards are made out of durable cedar. Are you noticing a pattern?
3. Adirondack Chair For Your Home – Woodworking For Mere Mortals
If you haven’t heard about Steve Ramsey and Woodworking For Mere Mortals, you have to check out his site. Not only does Steve provide great and easy-to-follow tutorials, but he’s also very entertaining. In this tutorial, he’ll show you how he made his adirondack chair. This tutorial also comes with a video. Check it out!
4. Adirondack Chair With Paracord Seat – John Malecki.com
What stood out for me on this project is the design of the seat. John uses paracord to create the seat for his adirondack chair. John also provides an excellent video to accompany the plans and tutorial. Hope you enjoy.
5. Easy Adirondack Chair Plans – Popular Mechanics
Lots of great pictures with this tutorial. The chair design is very stylish and they also show you how to make a table to go with your adirondack chair.
6. How to Build an Adirondack Chair (with plans) – Black and Decker
Black & Decker has created a wonderful tutorial on making an adirondack chair. This one is pretty straightforward. It’s probably not as stylish as some of the others I’ve seen, but sometimes simple is better; form follows function, as they say. They use cedar boards and the tutorial is 10 steps.
7. Adirondack Chair Tutorial and Plans – Four Oaks Crafts
If you’ve been following my site, you’ve probably seen my adirondack chair design. I wanted to make one with some different twists. I used oak plywood for the sides and the back. And I used oak dowels for the seat. It probably takes a little longer than your standard adirondack chair build, but you’ll have a solid chair that’s both stylish and comfortable. I keep my chair under the front porch covering so it’s not exposed directly to rain. Plywood doesn’t hold up to direct moisture for long, and I even put about 3 coats of spar urethane on mine. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the plans and tutorial.
I hope you have enjoyed these adirondack chair plans and tutorials. Please take a minute and leave a comment. Let me know which adirondack chair you plan to tackle.

Both Wood Magazine and Woodworkers Journal have published plans for a bar stool height Adirondack chair. You can actually buy the cardboard templates at Rockler. I plan to build a couple of these since as the have gotten older I find it hard to get up from a traditional Adirondack. My first diy project over 20 years ago was a pair of Adirondack chairs. They turned on great but unfortunately I built them out of poplar and even though painted they rotted out within a few years.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah, my first chair was made out of pine. I painted it, but it only lasted a couple seasons.
