I love this new kit from Penn State Industries — the Fly Fishing Pen. This will make a great gift for the fisherman in your life. It’s a fun and easy pen to make. The designs on this pen capture the essence of the sport.
Prominent pen features:
The pen tip displays an angler casting a line. Mountains are in the background.
The pen clip is a fly rod and reel.
The pen clip meshes with the pen cap, the line extending up to a trout caught on the line.
The very end of the cap replicates an open spooled fly fishing reel.
The Fly Fishing Pen Kit costs $14.95 and, it requires the same bushings for the American Patriot Pen. With only one tube, it’s simple to make. This pen comes with the popular Parker Style refill. Here’s a link to the Fly Fishing pen kit instructions if you’d like to read them.
I used bamboo instead of wood. Early in its history, the fly rod was made from bamboo. Check out this short article on the history of the fly rod. Fly rod materials have changed over the year. Today, they’re made of other materials besides bamboo.
But in keeping with the fly rod’s history, I thought it would be appropriate to use the bamboo. Fortunately, I had recently purchased a bamboo spoon for just $4. And it was wide enough to accommodate this kit.
I hope you enjoy some pics below of me making the pen.

That looks pretty cool, will have to try it soon.
I make a lot of pens. I have used old fiberglass rods with twist pen kits. Bet you can find one that works with this also. Makes a nice “fishing” pen. i will be getting some of these kits for sure.
Thanks for sharing that. It’s interesting, because my fishing buddy was showing me a bamboo fly rod he found in an antique store. These rods are hollow because they were made from individual segments of bamboo glued together. I bet they would make a nice blank. I ended up using some bamboo from a spoon I bought at Target.
If the fly rod is hex shaped then likely not hollow. They are usually made from six segments of triangular shaped bamboo then glued together as a solid piece. You may can drill out the butt if it is large enough to accept a tube.
Thanks, that is good to know!
