You get what you pay for. This past weekend my plastic paper towel holder broke. Hate it when that happens! So I decided to make a more substantial holder, using industrial pipes. You know, those pipes you would normally use for gas or steam.
Every week, I continue to be inspired by the many projects others are creating with a few simple pipes you can buy from Home Depot.
I’m seeing people making anything from lamps to shelves to coffee tables. These pipes are easy to assemble and not that expensive. Yes, the Home Depot associates might look at you funny, but these projects are definitely worth it and fun to make.
Let me take you through a few photos and show you how I put together an industrial pipe paper towel holder — in about 30 minutes. Anybody can do this! And it looks cool!
Above is the picture of my cheap plastic paper towel holder.
In the store, I laid out the pipes and connectors (well, I reenacted that in my shop) and made sure the pipes were long enough and the right size for my paper towels. I like to use the blue heavy duty shop paper towels.
I used the black steel pipe and you can find it in the plumbing section of most hardware stores or home improvement stores. This whole project was around $15.
Using 4 wood deck screws, I attached the pipe flange to my existing wooden shelve.
Next, I took some channel lock pliers and attachéd the other pipes. As you can see in the picture, I have a flange, then a 3 inch by 3/4 inch diameter pipe, then a 3/4 inch diameter 90 degree bend, then a 10 inch X 3/4 inch diameter pipe, and finished with a 3/4 cap.
I love how this paper towel holder turned out. I know it costs several times more than my plastic one, but I don’t think I’ll ever have to worry about this one breaking … LOL. This is going to be a great addition to my shop.
Stay turned, because I have a couple more pipe projects in the works. One is a candle holder and the other, a lamp. Can’t wait to see how they turn out.
